Underarms Waxing: What to Do (and Avoid) in the First 72 Hours
By Rituals For Beauty | November 3, 2026
Budget-friendly waxing in Harrisburg, PA with free parking, card payments, walk-ins welcome when I can fit you in, and an LGBTQ-friendly space.
The most important rule after a 15-minute underarm wax is simple: keep the area clean, cool, and dry, and skip deodorant and heavy sweat for the first day. Freshly waxed underarms are extra reactive for 24 to 72 hours. If you protect that window, you usually avoid the stingy bumps and irritation that make people swear off waxing.
I’m right here in Harrisburg, in East Harrisburg near the Union Deposit Road commercial corridor, so a lot of my underarm-wax clients are coming in before a shift, between errands, or while they’re already out shopping. Timing matters, and I’ll help you plan it so you’re not sweating in a tight uniform right afterward.
Your 0 to 24-hour plan: deodorant pause, cooler showers, looser sleeves
Right after waxing underarms, those hair follicles are open and your skin barrier is a little cranky. That’s why the first day is all about reducing heat, friction, and bacteria.
For the first 24 hours: skip deodorant, skip heavy sweating, and keep showers lukewarm. It’s the fastest way to calm redness and lower your ingrown-hair risk.
Do this
- Rinse in a lukewarm shower if you need to. Pat dry, don’t rub.
- Wear a looser top so fabric isn’t constantly rubbing the underarm area.
- Keep your hands off. Touching and checking all day is one of the quickest ways to irritate it.
Avoid this
- Deodorant and antiperspirant, especially anything scented or “clinical strength.”
- Hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, and hot yoga. Heat makes irritation louder.
- A hard workout. If you have a sweaty commute off I-83 or you’re working a shift on Union Deposit Road or Derry Street, plan a wax for a day you can stay cooler.
Quick local timing tip: If you’re in Harrisburg, Paxtang, Penbrook, Steelton, Highspire, or Hummelstown and you’re driving in, try to schedule when you can go straight home after. The first day is the one you want to protect the most.
24 to 72 hours: how to calm bumps without accidentally causing them
By day two, most people feel “back to normal, ” and that’s when little mistakes happen. Your skin is still settling. Keep it simple and gentle.
Washing and moisturizing
Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser in the shower. Pat dry. Then apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or aloe gel if you feel dry or tight. More product is not better here. A light layer keeps you comfortable without clogging pores.
Sweat, friction, and uniforms
Try to avoid long periods of heavy sweat or tight sleeves rubbing the underarm crease. If you can’t avoid it because of work, keep the area clean and dry and bring a clean, soft cloth to gently blot. Don’t reapply scented deodorant to “fix it.” That usually backfires.
Pools and hot tubs
Hold off on pools, lakes, and hot tubs for 48 to 72 hours. Chlorine, heat, and bacteria are a rough combo for freshly waxed skin.
48 to 72+ hours: the gentle exfoliation rule that prevents ingrowns
Ingrowns usually come from dead skin blocking the hair as it grows back. The fix is consistent, gentle exfoliation, but timing matters. If you exfoliate too soon, you’ll irritate the surface and end up with more bumps, not fewer.
My rule of thumb: wait 48 to 72 hours, then start with a soft washcloth in the shower. If your skin tolerates it well, you can add a low-strength salicylic or glycolic product later. If you’re red or tender, wait another day.
Skip harsh scrubs, dry brushing, and anything that feels like sandpaper. Underarm skin is thin and it gets rubbed all day. Gentle and consistent wins.
And please don’t pick at bumps. If you’ve ever found yourself doing that while juggling a busy schedule, you’re not alone. It just turns a small clogged follicle into a bigger, longer-lasting spot.
The simple product routine I recommend after waxing underarms
You don’t need a whole shelf of products after underarm waxing. Most irritation comes from overdoing it or using something scented too soon.
Stick to these product types
- Mild, fragrance-free cleanser for the first few days
- Fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe gel, used lightly
- Gentle exfoliation starting at 48 to 72 hours (soft cloth first)
Hold off on these for a bit
- Strong acids, retinoids, and heavily fragranced body products for 2 to 3 days
- Perfume applied near the underarm area
- “Detox” underarm masks right after waxing
When to text me: what’s normal, what’s not, and how I’ll help
Mild redness, a little tenderness, and a few tiny bumps can be normal right after waxing underarms. It usually settles down as you keep the area clean, cool, and product-light.
Reach out to me if you’re unsure about anything, especially if you notice increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or pus. Those aren’t the “normal” wax bumps, and you shouldn’t wait it out.
